Patio Covers & Porches: Protecting the Extention of Your Home

Attached patio covers and porches are the perfect extension of your home. Over the years, many homeowners in the valley have even enclosed these structures to convert them into extra indoor living spaces. Some of these flat low slope roofs are porches in the front or patio covers in the back extending to your pool or backyard space. Regardless of how you use the space underneath, the roof on top requires proper attention along with its fascia wood and trim on the sides.

The Modern Upgrade: Moving Beyond "Hot Mop"

Back in the day, traditional porch roofs were typically built using tar and gravel—what we roofers call "hot mop" systems. Today, those outdated systems are being converted into single- or double-ply membrane roofing systems (such as TPO or Rolled Roofing) for significantly better performance and a much longer lifespan.

In our area, the standard for these low-slope roofs has shifted to rolled roofing or a granulated cap sheet paired with a durable base sheet underlayment underneath. This modern peel and stick combination provides excellent waterproofing against our unique climate. Some applications use a torch down method (applying high heat) while many use a peel and stick application which is less risky anmd just as effective in our ambient hot temperatures.

Common Issues to Watch For

Because patio covers attach directly to your home's main structure, neglecting them can cause major issues that spread to your main house or along its respective ledger wall. Some of the most common patio roof problems we encounter include:

  • Wood Damage: Old water rot, dry rot, and severe damage to fascia boards and trim.
  • Pest Infestations: Termite damage or hidden bee and wasp nests.
  • Wind & Weather Wear: Wind-damaged cap sheets or material that has peeled up at the corners.
  • Poor Installation: Bumpy, wavy, or blistering cap sheets caused by trapped moisture or improper initial installation.
